Umpires
This year Springfield Babe Ruth will again work to get more adult umpires to do the 13-15 year old group. We are offering rates competitive with other umpire organizations in the area.
We are taking names now for youngsters 15 and up to umpire games. This is a great opportunity to earn some spending money in a sport they love.
Contact our Umpire Coordinator if you are interested in umpiring in the spring.
More information is available on the Umpire Training Page.
Fall Baseball 2007 Recap
This year Springfield Babe Ruth spearheaded the formation of the Babe Ruth Fall Baseball League. It was a very successful first year for the league. It is a Northern Virginia wide league that included teams from McLean, Falls Church Annandale, Greater Fairfax, Northern Fairfax, Greater Loudoun and Easter Loudoun. There were 33 teams in three age categories which included 10, 13 year old transition teams. We look forward to an even better season next year now that the organization of the league is behind us. We will be getting the notifications of registrations out at Spring signup and again near the end of the spring season.
This league is open to teams from all leagues in Northern Virginia, including non-Babe Ruth Leagues. The individual leagues form the teams and submit them to us for scheduling. We charter the teams under Babe Ruth for insurance purposes, but this does not prevent teams from other leagues from registering with us.
There are no drafts for this league. We will structure divisions within each age category to maintain balanced competition.
See you next fall.

Conclusion of 2007 All-star Season
Congratulations to each of our tournament teams for their hard work and competiveness in their respective tournaments. This is a report of the outcome for each of our teams.
13 year olds
This team was managed by Boyd Bankston with Rich Schlobach the assistant coach. These two coaches spend a lot of their own time practicing the team in the mornings for several weeks. Obviously we had a very small group of kids from which to form the 13 year old team. However, the managers selected 14 players which was more than half of the 13 year olds in the league. The team practiced diligently for over two weeks and it showed in their performance. They lost a heart breaker in 10 innings in the first district game. They could not hold off a strong Greater Fairfax team in their second game and were out of the tournament. They showed that they were competitive in the tournament. This was an experience I hope they all enjoyed and will learn from. Lets come back next year, get better and have another go of it next spring.
13-15 year olds
This team was managed by Rafael Sanchez with assistant coaches Rob Linares and Bob Hankins. They played a tough game against Pioneer in the first game which they lost 7-3. I watched some of their second game before I left to go to the 13 year olds tournament. When I left the game was 4-1 in favor of Greater Fairfax and things were not looking too good. When I tuned in this morning the final score was 10-9, Greater Fairfax. What an exciting game that must have been. I compliment the managers, coaches and players for their hard work and dedication. Many of these players will be moving up to the senior league next year. The league welcomes them.
16 year olds
The 16 year olds were managed by Alan Little and coached by Frank Lee and Buzz Jordan. The 16 year olds won the district tournament this year, defeating Falls Church, 19-6 and 10-9. They went on the the state tournament in Purcellville. They lost the first game by the score of 11-1. That might have indicated they were over classed in the state tournament, but they came back with determination in the next game. EVidently, it was a good game, but they came up a little short losing to Greater Loudoun 5-6. Springfield Babe Ruth congratulates the manager, coaches and players for getting to the state tournament and for their determination there.
16-18 year olds
The 16-18 year olds were managed by Shannon Coffey with assistant coach Mike Metoxen. It appeared the team was over matched by Greater Fairfax when they lost the first game 14-0. However, they were more competitive in the second game, losing 4-1. It is useful to note that Greater Fairfax is currently in the Championship game of the state tournament in Brunswick having defeated four opponents so far. So perhaps in retrospect our team was up against a very good team in Greater Fairfax.

Babe Ruth Baseball vs. AAU Baseball
Parents with players emerging from Little League are confronted with a choice of playing Babe Ruth Baseball or playing AAU Baseball. We are often asked, what is the difference and which is best? Like most things there is no single answer for all players and all circumstances. It is certainly true that there are differences between the two and each has its advantages and disadvantages for each player. We offer here a letter provided by a long time coach for Springfield Babe Ruth that sheds some light on the issue.

SBRL needs Volunteers
SBRL cannot provide a quality program without volunteers to manage the league.
We need volunteers to join the Board and help with the administration of the league. Although we have had several new members join the Board this year we are still in need of volunteers at several positions. The cost of providing Babe Ruth baseball to each player is much more than the registration fee. Hundreds of hours of volunteer time make it possible for your children to play baseball. The league needs your help.
Please offer your help at registration or call 703-451-8325.
